2024 Southwest Region Sacred Music Camp

Theme: Called to be God’s vessels

Requirements:

  1. Participants must be in 5th grade (during 2023-2024 school year) or above (adults included).
  2. Participants must attend full-time, beginning from check-in on Sunday. We will not accept part-time participants.

Registration:

  1. Fill out the registration form here at https://events.tjc.org between March 19, 12 AM PT, and May 7, or until registration is full.
  2. Max capacity of participants is 90. Once registration is full, all new registrants will be placed on a wait-list. Wait-listed registrants will be admitted if we have any cancellations.
  3. Each applicant must complete this required release form (one per participant), print and sign it, and submit it digitally through a scan or clear photo to swrmusicministry@tjc.org.
  4. Each applicant must send in any other required registration materials, as outlined in the registration, by May 7.
  5. Participants may arrive up to 1 day before the event start date (Sat, Jun 29) and stay up to 1 day after the event end date (Sat, Jul 6). For minors under 18 years old, parents need to fill out this required lodging form and submit it by May 31 to swrmusicministry@tjc.org. For adults 18 years and older, no form is required.

Once we have received the signed release form and any other applicable registration materials, we will send the participant an acceptance email.

Logistical Reminders:

  • Check-in on Sunday, June 30th, begins at 12:00 PM and ends at 1:00 PM PT. Lunch will be provided.
  • Book flights to arrive at and depart from SNA (John Wayne Airport), LGB (Long Beach Airport) or ONT (Ontario Airport). Flights arriving at or departing from other airports will require you to arrange your own transportation.

Music Ministry Training

Each participant will select 1st and 2nd choice for music ministry training classes from the list below. (Note: Due to limited class sizes, participants may not be placed in their first choice.)

  1. Vocal coaching (a) E2 (b) J1 and up
  2. Elements of music – Learn the basics of music, including melody, rhythm, dynamics, harmony and timbre.
  3. Hymnal leading
  4. Hymnal piano accompaniment – Come prepared with 5 hymns played with both hands (1 per category – sentimental, triumphant, reflective, rejoicing/lively, majestic)
  5. Choral accompaniment
  6. Choral conducting


Electives

The elective classes and requirements are as follows. (Note: Due to limited class sizes, participants may not be placed in their first choice.)

  • Creative Instruments (Recommended for E2): Participants will make instruments, learn how to sing praise songs, and play creative instruments to spread the word of God through praise.
  • Praise Team (Recommended for J1 and above): Participants will learn and sing several praise songs to proclaim the word of God. The Praise Team will teach and engage the congregation in praise on Music Worship Night.
    • Requirements:
      • Can sight-read music
      • Registrant must submit a recording of singing in his/her voice part for hymn 61 – Lead, Kindly Light. Sisters are encouraged to record both soprano and alto; brothers are encouraged to record both tenor and bass. However only 1 part is required.
  • Instrumental Chamber: Participants will work together in chamber groups to learn pieces and use their instruments to praise the Lord. Note: Depending on need, participants in this elective may also play with a choir.
    •  Requirements:
      • Registrant must submit a recording of playing a 2-octave scale in any key and melody of hymn 492 in any key appropriate to his/her instrument.
  • Composition (Recommended for J1 and above)Note: Please bring your own laptop for this creative class! Participants will learn fundamental composition skills, such as how to prepare lyrics for music by becoming aware of rhythm and accents in the spoken language, and practice putting them into compositions with music software. Participants experienced in composition will further their skills through practice and feedback.
  • Bible Songs: Participants will sing memory verse and Bible songs to share the word of God and to help others store the word of God in their hearts.

We will conclude the music camp with a Music Worship Night on Friday, July 5 at 7:20 PM. Please note that only baptized church members may present in this worship service.
